Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS EXM

Prefixes Served:

Notes:
Also serves Cedar Hill MCA (636-274).  CO is located in east central Missouri. It houses a remote hosted by the Fenton, MO 5ESS switch. The building was built by the same firm which produced the Antonia office, the similarities are striking. Obviously, Cedar Hill has experienced more growth during the 80s and 90s as Hiway 30 was improved to a divided highway with limited access.

Chesterfield

Listing Updated:
July 2010

Operating Company:
at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
CHFDMO52DSA

Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS Host

Prefixes Served:
(636) 247, 519, 530, 532, 536-7, 720, 730, 733, 735-7

Notes:
This office was built in the middle of an empty field in the 1990 time frame. It was a single floor structure and it was built specifically to house the first 5ESS ISDN switch in Southwestern Bell. It provided ISDN services to the Advanced Technology lab of SBC and to the AT&T Network Systems (forerunner of Lucent) building at 1111 Woodsmill Road. Since that time much has been built around this office and, when it became necessary to add a second floor the city of “Town & Country” required a ton of aesthetic work to make the office fit into the residential setting. So they put on a fancy tin roof and a wall on the right side of the building which hides the emergency AC generator located there.

This area really took off in the last 35 years driven by the opening of the “Six Flags” amusement park and the development of a couple of golf course developments. It is one of the largest Remote Switch entities in the country.

Also serves Fenton MCA. This CO is located in St. Louis county. It houses a 5ESS switch which was installed in the second floor addition. This CO was home to 2 Exchanges DAvis for lowest call rates and DIamond for people who needed to call downtown St Louis a lot. When the Meramec river (a tributary of the Mississippi) gets high this office has to be protected from flooding.

Notes:
Also serves Herculaneum-Pevely MCA rate center (636-475).  This is a new building built to house the remote switch hosted by the DMS100 in Festus. Pevely is a familiar name in every St. Louis household since the dairy farm based there is still the largest in the eastern Missouri area. “White in the bottle, pink on the cheeks, pinky, pinky Pevely.” Was the old advertising motto.

High Ridge

Photo 2

Listing Updated:
July 2010

at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
HGRGMO56RS2

Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS EXM

Prefixes Served:
(636) 376, 677

Notes:
Also serves High Ridge MCA rate center (636-677).  It houses an RSM hosted by the Fenton 5ESS switch. This area grew rapidly after Highway 30 was improved from a 2 lane road to divided, limited access highway in 1980. This once rural community is now a very popular bedroom community for St. Louis.

High Ridge

"House Springs"

Listing Updated:
July 2010

Operating Company:
at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
HGRGMO57RS2

Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS RSM

Prefixes Served:
(636) 375, 671

Notes:
Also serves House Springs MCA (636-671). This houses an RSM which is hosted by the Maxville 5ESS. It should have been hosted by the Fenton 5ESS but that switch was not ready in time to host this replacement for the old Step by Step switch. This was an old farm agency building for the early Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. It was an old farm house in which the wife and children worked for SWBT as operators on a manual switch board until automatic dialing via Step by Step was invented. The building has no indoor plumbing, hence the portable toilet out front.

When the RSM was placed in the 1980s, SWBT had to dig a basement under the CO for the power plant.

Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS EXM

Prefixes Served:
(636) 461, 464, 467, 525

Notes:
It houses a remote switch module hosted by the Maxville 5ESS switch. It is a prime example of Telephone architecture in the 1970s, no windows, no ornamentation, no business office, purely functional building space.

Jonesburg

(SBC/AT&T Repeater)

Listing Updated:
July 2010

Operating Company:
at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
JNBGMORS?

Switch Type:
None

Prefixes Served:
None

Notes:
This building is not in an area served by AT&T, it is one of many old repeater stations which Southwestern Bell built back in the 50s and 60s for their far flung interoffice facility network. This building started life as the small portion on the right side of the photo and has been grown twice as you can see looking at the roofline or the brickwork. The SBC folks wanted to divest of most of these in the 1980s as they started fiber optic deployments in the IOF network but could not find buyers. It turned out to be a great thing as they started to deploy SONET rings throughout the network in the 1990s and these provided ideal hubbing and interconnection points.

Manchester

Photo 2

Listing Updated:
July 2010

Operating Company:
at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
MNCHMO59DS0

Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS

Prefixes Served:
(636) 207, 227, 230, 256, 386, 391, 394, 527, 891

Notes:
It is situated in West St. Louis county and houses a 5ESS switch. There are only a few 5ESS Optical Remote Modules which have ever been “rehomed”, on of them is now hosted in this office. When ISDN service was first turned up in St. Louis the VP of Lucent in this location needed to have ISDN service so he could interact with the president & CEO of SWBT over ISDN lines so the ORM at that site was hosted by the Chesterfield 5ESS switch. Only Lucent lines were to be assigned to that ORM but, over time, residential and business customers in adjoining properties got assigned to it. When the building had to be demolished for a shopping center the remote had to be rehomed on the nearest 5ESS in the rate center boundaries and that is Manchester.

Notes:
Also serves Maxville MCA. It is home for a 5ESS switch which hosts the House Springs, Missouri remote switch. This switch is in Maxville but serves the much larger town of Arnold. This blond brick is not very common in AT&T.

O'Fallon

Brightspeed/Centurylink

CLLI:
OFLNMOXADS0

Switch Type:
Ribbon/Genband/Nortel DMS-100/200

CLLI:
PONDMO62RS4

Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS Remote

Prefixes Served:
(636) 273, 405, 422, 458

Notes:
Also serves Pond MCA. It houses an RSM hosted by the Chesterfield 5ESS. This office is just west of Manchester but is extremely difficult to find. This is the front entrance of the building but it does not face the road it is on, from the road all you see is a driveway to largish building which stands with its back to you. The only giveaway is an occasional AT&T truck parked in the lot in front of the office. I have never seen another AT&T CO that remotely resembles it.

St. Charles

Listing Updated:
July 2010

Operating Company:
at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
STCHMO63DSA

Switch Type:
Ribbon/Genband/Nortel DMS-100

Prefixes Served:
(636) 255, 443, 723-4, 896, 916, 925, 940, 946-7, 949

Notes:
Houses a Nortel DMS100 switch and serves the St. Charles county seat. The office is the toll collection center for all traffic from Northeast Missouri. It is built on a heavily sloped street so that from one view it appears to be a 4 story building but from the other corner, only a hundred yards north, it appears to be a 3 story building. Saint Charles was the first capitol city of the state of Missouri being displaced by Jefferson City after the capitol building there was finished.

at&t/SBC/Southwestern Bell

CLLI:
VYPKMO64DS0

Switch Type:
Nokia/Alcatel/Lucent 5ESS

Prefixes Served:
(636) 225-6, 517, 529, 825, 827, 861

Notes:
Also serves Valley Park MCA. Office houses a No. 5 ESS switch. The town was a resort for the rich of St. Louis in the late 1890s and early 1900s. It suffered a long slide until about 20 years ago, when the Corps of Engineers figured out that they needed to stop people from rebuilding houses on the Merrimac river after floods. The town is positively robust now and a huge amount of new housing has new access and/ or DSL lines from this central office.

Notes:
Also serves Washington MCA (636-432). This office houses an RSM hosted by the Valley Park 5ESS. In December 2009 Uverse became available for subscribers in this Missouri river town. The top floor was added for a 2BESS switch which was subsequently replaced by the remote switch module.

Wright City

(AT&T Long Lines)

Photo 2

Listing Updated:
August 2013

Operating Company:
at&t Long Lines

CLLI:
WRCYMOORRS1

Switch Type:
None

Prefixes Served:
None

Notes:
This is the Wright City, MO AT&T repeater station. It sits in an area served by Century Link. It is difficult to see that this is a cinder block building because of the application of a thick paint like material 7 or 8 years ago. Directly behind the photographer is an old AT&T Long Lines Radio building almost identical to the old Kingdom City, MO building. It now belongs to a bank and is beautifully maintained and landscaped.
